GMB Backs Sarwar for Scottish Labour Leader

GMB Scotland will endorse Anas Sarwar for the position of Scottish Labour Leader.

Both Anas Sarwar and Monica Lennon had the opportunity to present their respective visions for the future of the party to the union’s Scottish political sub-committee today (Wednesday 25 January).

In line with the union’s policy commitments, the committee’s recommendation will now be conveyed to GMB Scotland’s Labour Party affiliate members ahead of the leadership ballot, which runs from 9 to 26 February.

GMB Scotland Secretary Gary Smith said: “Labour is fortunate to have both candidates but there can only be one leader and it is the decision of our political committee to endorse the candidacy of Anas Sarwar.

“For many years it has been very clear that Labour has lacked clarity of purpose and Scotland has lacked effective political opposition - Anas presented a clear and unambiguous plan to restore both.

“Both Anas and Monica are active GMB members who are consistent campaigners for the interests of working people across the country and we wish them both the best for the race ahead.”
