GMB seeks urgent talks with ASDA over £10 billion Sainsbury’s merger 

Responding to this afternoon’s (Saturday 28 April) media reports that supermarket retail giants ASDA and Sainsbury are understood to be in advanced talks over a £10 billion merger, and with focus on the Scottish economy, GMB Scotland Secretary Gary Smith said: 

“We will be seeking urgent talks with ASDA concerning the future prospects for its Scottish retail operations and for its two distribution centres in Falkirk and Grangemouth. 

We have also contacted the Scottish Government given negotiations between ASDA and Sainsbury’s are clearly at advanced stage. 

Our priority is the defence of our members' interests and should this merger go through there could be serious implications for hundreds and perhaps thousands of jobs across Scotland.”
