Supreme Court Decision on Heathrow Third Runway
Responding to the UK Supreme Court decision today (Wednesday 16 December) lifting the ban on plans for a third runway at Heathrow Airport, GMB Scotland Organiser Bob Deavy said:
“This is a beam of optimism for Scotland’s decimated aviation sector – the expansion of a third runway at Heathrow will be good for our connectivity and good for the Scottish economy.
“Thousands of workers across Scotland depend on airport jobs but the swathes of redundancies suffered in recent times evidence the impact of indecision on the part of government throughout this pandemic, and we are far from out of the woods yet.
“That’s why we have worked with the Scottish Government Minister for Transport in recent weeks about the defence of our members’ jobs and the future of the industry, and we are clear that we need an urgent plan for jobs and growth post-COVID.
“What we need now is for UK Government Ministers to finally step-up to the plate and today’s decision gives us the perfect opportunity to develop an interdependent industrial and investment strategy that sets-out the next generation of aviation across the UK.”
