University Catering Contract Extension ‘First Step Towards Doing The Right Thing’
University catering contract extension ‘first step towards doing the right thing’
GMB Scotland has today (Monday 14 November) welcomed a decision by Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) to extend a catering contract with local service provider Cordia, safeguarding sixty-nine jobs for Christmas.
The livelihoods of the university’s long-standing catering staff had been thrown into doubt after GCU terminated a sixteen year working relationship with Glasgow City Council ALEO Cordia Services last April.
With GCU previously refusing the prospect of TUPE, staff faced a December deadline on their employment status. However, after a campaign by GMB Scotland, GCU has extended the contract until April 2017 in order for both parties to resolve the future of the catering staff.
GMB Scotland Organiser Louise Gilmour said: “GCU have taken the first step towards doing the right thing.
Extending the Cordia contract until April 2017 gives the workforce some short-term security and particularly for the festive period.
The matter is not closed and GMB Scotland will be working tirelessly to protect our members’ interests over the coming weeks and months.
The objective now is for both parties to deliver long-term security for our members crave and that should be the safeguard of their jobs, terms and conditions at GCU.”
