GMB Scotland in Asda – The Future of Asda
You will by now have read the troubling reports that Asda / Wal-Mart are in discussions with private equity firms over investment and ownership of the business moving forward.
The involvement of private equity firms are almost never a positive development and we should be very concerned about this latest development in the future of Asda.
The terms and conditions of frontline retail colleagues have been under siege through the Contract 6 imposition, what we don’t need are any further threats of cuts to jobs and pay.
And workers in distribution won’t be spared either if the private equity vultures get their claws into Asda, casualisation of work goes hand-in-hand with private equity ownership.
In the coming days I will arrange a schedule for workplace visits to discuss our response but we will have to re-double our organising efforts for the battles ahead.
Please ensure your contact details are up to date so you can receive our latest communications. You can do this at www.gmb.org.uk/mygmb
And if you know any colleagues who are not in a union and want to be part of Scotland’s campaigning trade union, they can join GMB now at www.gmb.org.uk/join
As ever, if you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact me on 07921 289740 or email robert.deavy@gmb.org.uk

Asda - Sainsbury’s Merger Blocked by the Competitions & Market Authority
As many of you will now know, this morning (Thursday 25 April) the CMA confirmed that it has blocked the Asda – Sainsbury’s merger.
The decision is good news for GMB members. The desperate way both companies acted to try and force a merger through showed this deal was only ever about lining the pockets of the super-rich owners and not about protecting jobs and communities.
You can read our General Secretary Tim Roache’s full reaction to the CMA decision here
Our priority now is to campaign against the imposition of the new variation of ‘Contract 6’. An estimated 70,000 staff have so far refused to accept this attack on your terms and conditions.
GMB Scotland’s ‘2020 Vision’ for Asda is an employer where GMB members are properly recognised and rewarded for the work they do while contributing towards a revitalised and profitable business.
Our priority is the defence of your interests and if you have any questions then please do not hesitate to contact me on 07921 289740 or email robert.deavy@gmb.org.uk

GMB Scotland in Asda - Huge GMB Win In Asda Court Of Appeal Hearing
Our priority is the defence of your interests. That's why we will always pursue justice and equality for our members.
Yesterday, Thursday 31 January, GMB celebrated a huge win after the Court of Appeal upheld the ruling that Asda store staff can compare their roles with those in the distribution centres.
The landmark judgment follows the union’s victory in the Employment Tribunal and Employment Appeal Tribunal against Asda’s attempts to block the legal claims of tens of thousands of workers.
Here's what our General Secretary, Tim Roache, has said:
“We welcome this decision, we’ll always pursue justice and equality for our members and this decision is undoubtedly the right one.
“We know we’re not all the way there, there are more hurdles to jump in this process and as always we remain ready to negotiate should Asda want to get round the table."
This ruling has put the ball back in the employer's court - Asda must listen to GMB members and our demands for equality.
If you haven’t yet lodged your claim, you can do so by contacting our legal affiliates on 0800 6893289.

Dear GMB member,
GMB Scotland In ASDA – Severe Weather Grievance Update
The priority of GMB Scotland is the defence of your interests.
That's why after the severe weather earlier this year which made it extremely difficult for most people to get to work, GMB Scotland lodged a regional grievance with ASDA to try and improve the company’s three options to cover the time lost.
ASDA has now agreed that this will no longer be the individual stores decision and it will be up to you to choose which of the three options works best for you. Remember, if the store manager chooses to close the store you will still be paid.
I would like thank everyone that signed the grievance petition. If you have any issues or concerns in your workplace, get in touch with GMB Scotland.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me at: robert.deavy@gmb.org.uk

Dear GMB Member
The priority of GMB Scotland is the defence of your interests.
As you know, GMB has lodged a ‘failure to agree’ with your employer over the recent imposition of changes to your pension scheme.
But ASDA’s roll back hasn’t just put members to the bottom of the UK supermarket retail pension league table, many colleagues have been relegated out of the pensions league altogether.
As a result, we’re speaking to the Unions solicitors about a potential legal claim. Here’s what we need to find out:
GMB may be able to lodge a claim for compensation on your behalf – but we need to hear from you by Friday 22 June 2018 so we can assess the potential claims.
Do contact us about this, or if you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact me on 07921 289740 or email robert.deavy@gmb.org.uk
